love and hate

Once, I've been overcome with a hate that I never would've thought I was capable of.

It came like a storm: gradually, violently.

I hated the world, the stupid, materialistc world we live in. What ridiculous standards we set for each other. How dumb that we no longer cared for the value of the world, only the price of it.

I hated people who've betrayed me, vilified me, put me in bad times or left me during them.

I hated what we'd become: mindless, unquestioning beings who did what was right because we were told it was right. We were told that racism was wrong, that sexism was wrong, yet too often I saw hidden prejudice and dangerous misunderstanding in the minds of those who were the angriest, the quickest to snap and yell at any sign of ignorance. Hypocrites, liars, conformists.

I hated hate, which was contagious.

I radiated hate. I brooded and fired myself up like a tight coil. And felt ashamed afterwards because of my hypocrisy; I hated superiority, but I acted as if I was superior.

Thankfully, it's only happened once in my life, during a particularly dark time.

Many times, I've been overcome with love.

I loved the world, the brilliant, brilliant world. Songbirds and steady heartbeats. Sheer wildness and wonder.

I loved people. Curious, brave, enthusiastic, creative, ambitious, strong, intelligent, kind, zany people. Visionaries, activists, prodigies, leaders, scientists, rebels, geniuses, healers, saints, heroes.

I loved what we'd become: passionate, political beings with a knack for survival. Educated, open-minded, social people. We were pushed to the ground; we got back up. We were told by all generations that we'd become shallow, self-obsessed, inappropriate hooligans. We refused to listen. Innovators, immortals, legends.

I'm not really sure why I wrote this. Maybe it's to save you from drowning in your own puddle of hate. Maybe it's because we all need a reminder that there's much to love in this world.

“People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”― Nelson Mandela

    1. Thanks for your kind words :) I don't think myself brave, bravery would be saying in out loud in front of people who'll judge you XD

  3. Absolutely beautiful, both in terms of prose and emotion. (What? I'm a writer and a literature student, I notice these things.) But on a more serious note, this is so amazing -- a lifetime's worth of philosophy in a pith. I do think love comes more naturally to people than hate, even though I think people are inherently selfish if not downright malicious -- it's so much easier to think of people I love than people I hate.

    1. Thank you so much! As a fellow writer and lit student, I understand your feels. XD I agree, we are selfish, it's in our nature (there is no greater desire than the desire to survive, imo), but the good thing is that many of us are selfless in our actions, and it's actions that count the most. Yeah, I was thinking of people I love for the second part ofthis post. It was indeed easier. :)

  4. Interesting points! A heart full of hate has no room for love.

  5. Oh boy I've been there hating everything and everyone around.I still have trouble keeping the hatred away but I do my best now to not give into my hatred.Actually that's a big reason why I started my blog to make a change and get the hatred out and it has really helped.Still sometimes I get serious hate when I see something I don't like usually I sleep on it now so that also helps :P
Yes everyone needs the reminder of love every now and then maybe they don't realize it but they do. :)

    1. Glad you know how it feels. Actually, I made this post to get the hatred out as well. :) If only we could all take a nap if we start to hate something, there would be world peace. XD

Thank you for your 'kind' (pun intended) words!

  6. I can relate. I went through a pretty dark time in my life as well, and I was overcome with this cloud of hate that I'll never understand where it came from, but I do remember always seeing the world as a mess and I hated everything about it. Gradually I've pulled myself out of that cloud and I couldn't be happier with the way I see the world and people now. There is a lot of love in the world, it just took me some time to see it.
Glad I'm not the only one who went through that little roller coaster. :P
    WONDERFUL POST, AS USUAL.

    1. Yes! I'm sad that you went through a dark time too but it's comforting to know I wasn't the only one who was overcome by hate. :) I'm glad you managed to come through!

  7. Great post so heartfelt and passionate... Although it made me quite scared as very soon in my life I fear there will be a dark time. All because of my Great Grandma is in hospital and the doctors have predicted that she will die this year. Iv'e always been really close to her and I don't know how I will let her go...

    1. Thank you. :) I'm sorry about your great grandma. Loss is a difficult thing to recover from, and I hope you are able to find the strength to let her go when the time comes. You will get through this, and every moment afterwards. As for your grandma, it is good to allow yourself to grieve, but you also need to let yourself smile for all the times you've spent with her. That way, you open your heart for further joy that life may bring. :)

  9. Dear Jo,

Wow. Just.. w o w. This piece is so beautiful, wild, perfect. It gave me literal chills. <3 You speak so much truth here, it's riveting. It can be so easy to hate all that the world is and has become, but just like Nelson Mandela said, love comes more natural to the human heart. I have to remind myself of that when I see injustice and lies spread all around me. Just know that your writing inspires me and others and it always will -- never stop dreaming.

    love,
    abbie

  11. love comes more naturally perhaps, but i think its harder. its easy to hate and live in that hate, but to love you have to move on, forgive, and choose not to dwell on the things that are so terrible: but to notice and grasp the wonderful parts of this world. this "brilliant, brilliant world.. Sheer wildness and wonder." as a great mind once said. =)

    1. Absolutely. To love requires forgiveness, and forgiveness requires strengh of character. It is a very difficult thing to forgive and forget. 'Great mind' pshh. :') but honestly, thank you for commenting. :)

  12. This is really good. I go through times when I can't stand the things I see in general society or the people around me or anything. I have to remind myself that there's good things too. We humans aren't a lost cause. :)

The world is such a wonderful, beautiful place full of amazing people and things. Sure, there's some bad. The bad and good is intermingled. That sounds contradictory; that a person can have both good and bad in them. But it's true, and sometimes it's hard not to focus on all the bad and realize that everyone is just grey, a mixture of both.

    1. Yes! That was me when I began writing this post. So I suppose I was reminding myself just as much as everyone else. XD

Absolutely. Even horrible people aren't all 100% bad. Even good, charitable people have flaws. Thanks for your comment :)

  13. I think this reminds me of a Martin Luther King Jr. quote: "I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to wear." It's funny... I saw it every day in my Biology class, but I never stopped to think about it the way you put it. Hate is a method, but I think, as you said, only love drives out hate. And it's worth it.

By the way, if you're interested, I nominated you for the Leibster Award: http://semilegacy.blogspot.com/2015/05/leibster-award-2015.html

  15. This is fabulousness. I AGREE. Love, don't hate! But at the same time I really like that quote and I think it's true...I think it's natural to hate at some point in your life, like hate really really fiercely. I've hated a lot of things but it never lasts long for me. BUT ANYWAY. This post was beautifully written. :)
